  3. i have passed out in 2017.Does gap of 3-4 years after B.tech with no job and internship experience matter in iit placements?I have no good project and internship in my B.tech carrier. My Question is after getting into iit will i get a chance to do good project and internship before placements so that i can cover my gap.Plzz answer my question i have totally messed my carrier and i need to change it through GATE?

    1. Yes somewhat it will matter !!! The HR people might ask about the gap. Yes you will get to do lot of good projects. Internship you can do if you can manage time well. Some of my batchmates have done internships and bagged PPO directly through it. Don't worry in IIT gap hardly matters. In placements there is so much rush that many will actually not ask about these things. good luck. cheers !!!

    7. But sir, when companies come for recruitment in iits, do they provide criteria like 70% in class 10, 12 and btech.
Because I have read on geeksforgeeks in recruitment process section of companies like walmart, citrix, arcesium they require 70% in class 10, 12 and btech.

Thanks for your reply now i am preparing for gate with basic level of coding of ds and algo in c++.I do not have time for competetive coding.I am planning for it after gate 2021.I am interested in AI/MLarea .plzz guide me is competetive coding necessary in iit and it's placements.Consider me as a begineer level programmer.i am interested in competetive coding but do not have time and can not take risk .

    1. Yes it's important to sustain in IIT and for placements too. Coding is all you need to crack the interviews. Even for AI/ML profile the initial screening round would be coding. For instance Microsoft, Flipkart, MTX every single company has a initial coding round for screening. But you can manage after cracking gate. No worries. You would get ample amount of time.

    2. One last Question When internship selection starts for m.tech students in iitd? For internship also is there any coding round ?What is the eligibility criteria for internship?I have heard students got internship according to their M.tech project

      Delete
    3. You have to apply offline for it before summer vacations. On campus internships won't be allowed for Mtech students. No such criteria and all. Just basic interview. Normal coding or none. Sometimes it depends on M.tech project but not necessarily

As the girl you mentioned got interviews from microsoft india & redmond,Do the interviewers of MS-INDIA & MS-REDMOND same or different. Also what is the difference between the selection process as the company remains the same.Does the remond office tends to ask more difficult questions ?

please throw some light on this MS INDIA VS MS REDMOND

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Once you qualify for software developer in MS-INDIA they ask if you would like to be interviewed for MS-REDMOND. If you say yes then they proceed with subsequent rounds where strict communication skills, behavioural questions, managerial skills, case analysis and solution thinking abilities are tested. Not that difficult if you have prepared these well but yes very tricky. One of the caveats here you should note is that if you get rejected in MS -REDMOND your MS-INDIA offer will also be terminated. So indeed quite risky a call. Interviewers would be different and you would have some online rounds with US recruiters.

  14. HELLO

I got selected in Computer Technology this year and I was wondering what should I go for next year. Should I go for an M.Tech with dissertation (project part 1 and part 2) or M.Tech without a dissertation (only project part 1 in 4th sem)?

I was thinking of selecting M.Tech without dissertation so that I can learn a few more courses and strengthen my CV. Should I go for it? Will it affect my placements? Since, placements start in December, I won't be starting my project until 4th sem. Will I be questioned on my project in my interview? Please guide.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am not sure if you can choose on your own. In Mtech cse you simply can't unless your cgpa is less than 7.25. If your cgpa is less than 7.25 then by default you will be allocated without a dissertation.

Still i am hoping you know your curriculum well. I have no idea of computer technology as it doesn't comes under cse dept. Yes in placements you might get questioned for your project. That would be a downside to go without a dissertation. So i won't recommend it. In interviews the most important topic discussion happens is with the project. They really don't care about your course work. So imagine you don't have a project then what would you say and discuss in that interview. Would be a silent rejection !!!

  17. Hey, Thanks a lot for such nice and informative blog. I have just a question, do 10th and 12th marks matter in IIT M.Tech CS placements ? Because I'm from a tier 3 college where mostly service based companies come and put these stupid school marks criterias. So even after having 8+ cgpa in B.Tech some of my seniors suffered for having low board marks. I'm also worried as I have just 66% in 12th but 8.2 as B.Tech cgpa.

    Thank you in advance.

    1. No it doesn't. Only the CGPA of iit matters !!! That too only for shortlisting. In most of the cases (after day 1) the cgpa requirement is also waived off. Direct walk in interviews are held.

You need to also check for financial thing...IIT Mtech at no cost as you would be getting stipend to manage your expenses....In foreign you would get stipend only if you qualify for TAship and they have a strict procedure for that. Many of my friends didn't qualify for TAship in US and they have to bear their expenses on their own.

The placements in IITs is students managed. So the HR has to be convinced for everything. This task is done by the placement coordinator, so if you think you fit for some position you can definitely ask the coordinator to pitch for.

  29. Hello sir, does MS by research CS students get same placement opportunities as M.Tech cse from old IITs ? I have heard that many companies does not allow MS by research students in placements. It would be very helpful if you can say about the current scenario regarding this. I'm very inclined towards CS research and found that MS program is more perfect for me than M.Tech. But is placement really an issue in MS CS, specially in old IITs ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes many companies actually don't allow. Also there is no time bound on MS program like in Mtech program. So this is one of the reasons why companies reluct to hire MS people. Sometimes it extends to 2.5 years and sometimes to even 3 years. MS Research is definitely not suitable for campus placement. Although if you do god research work then offcampus placement is definite. Teachers would help in that !!! But as of a trend now, many of the MS people lack their interest mid way and stop doing quality research. Now you dont have an exit in case of MS, while in Mtech you can !!! You need to check my MS program blog post.

Companies are hiring true talents, not Btech or Mtech or PhD. Even if you don't do any of these and participate in some hackathons and do really well they will hire you. So talent is all that matters. If you are after excellence then success is just a mere achievement...

I can give you with stats but don't wanna burden you with it. You will get to know when you join an IIT.

    1. FIrst of all, i guess they only allow branches which are related to computer science and engineering. So you need to check how relevant your branch is with computer science and engineering and then talk with iitd officials regarding that. You should never ask questions like which companies visit top iits. Every single company with every single profile visit whether oncampus or you get it via off campus. You need not worry about it. Good luck.

    1. Hi Manik. In placements eligibility there is no such age criteria but definitely during interview they will ask you about it. So in some top companies it will be hard to crack but you will definitely get placed in one of the good companies. Be prepared with a good professional justification for the 7 years gap. Personal reasons as answer won't help !!! A better option for you to join as Mtech in IIT and then convert to PhD. You will get money and after PhD you can easily convert to job. Or else you can go for GRE and study MS abroad. In abroad these sort of limitations are pretty rare.

    2. Thank you for the reply.
I have some liabilitilies & so i cannot go for studies beyond M.tech. It would be a great help for me if you tell what kind of problem i may face & in which company. Moreover, what extra i can do B4 joining M.Tech so that I can grab placement even in those companies as well like coading skills or something else.

    3. In continue with previous comment, right now i am in job as a full stack developer & if i join M.tech in 2022 by that time I'll have approx 1.5 to 2 year of experience, will that help me in placement like after gap i have experience so will that gap still be counted

    4. Take the case of Microsoft for instance. They hire in a pool from iit's. So everyone is of nearly same age group. This helps build a young and enthusiastic company culture. So you might not fit there and hence they may not hire you. So this sort of challenges you would be facing because of age difference. Even after getting hired, fitting in the right team may be an issue because of age difference. Good to hear that you have gained 2 years of experience in the meanwhile. It will definitely help recover some part of the 7 years gap. Yes it will help in your interviews. Yes coding skills are must if you wish for top companies to hire you irrespective of your age. Infact recently google. wells fargo, microsoft have started a venture to hire professionals who are willing to come back after a gap. So you should be positive about it. I have a separate coding regarding post. Do go through it. Make your coding skills so solid that no other hindrance can stop you. Companies will be forced to remove all their bars.

  46. Hi ruturaj. I wanted to ask is it a good idea for 2020 passout to take any lower nit from gate 2021 score OR prepare again to aim for older IITs next year given that I'm already working in service based company?

    1. Hi Ayush, Lower NIT's and even top NIT's are not that good for Mtech. So continue with your job alongside prepare for GATE 2022. Try for top 6 IIT's. Lower IIT's are even not that great for Mtech.

  47. IITs don't allow summer internships through campus? Don't they even allow final semester internship in company instead of Thesis? Is Thesis compulsory?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Through campus they don't allow. But you can go for offcampus and easily get an internship. Many of my friends went for internships. Also some professors have their own startups , you can work there. Some professors even refer students for inside iits internships in research hubs like tcs research hub, samsung research hub etc inside the campus. In final semester thesis is compulsory now a days. Previously one could opt for coursework instead of thesis work. But now they have mandated thesis work. So yes thesis is compulsory as per now. Mtech is of very short duration, so they don't allow summer internships in final semester as such.

My parents have supported me in all these times. So i am thankful to them.

I joined nios board due to my health issues during my 10th which led to a year gap between the 12th . Currently I am pursuing BE cse from tier 3 college would my nios board and a year gap would create a problem during the placement in iit from. M tech

    1. You percentage below 70 will affect getting shortlisted in 40% of the companies. Rest they shortlist only based on IIT CGPA. But after day 2 of placement you can expect that this criteria to be ignored by companies. So you may not get the best of companies but not the worst also.

  54. Sir, so somewhat my 10th and 12th will be a barrier for few MNCs. If I could perform better in my engineering and somehow secure a good rank in gate then also it will not be a good opportunity for me to work in a good companies due to my average grads in High school and 12th.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Don't worry too much about it as you are still above 60%. Some companies set criteria like 60% plus throughout the career. So you would definitely fit in there. Only few top ones set it to be above 70%. But remember as i always say, if your skills go beyond the limits then nothing can stop you !!! Not even iit cgpa !!! Try to achieve that. For example you are a giant in blockchain technology and in industry there are hardly any good blockchain engineers. Now everything else will get ignored. So try to aim for being expert of a certain domain and then see the magic.

    1. Placement mein selection mein kabhi kabhi 70% plus criteria set kar diya jaata hai jab jyada bache ho jaate hain kisi company ke liye...Also during interview they might reject you because of this percent. Microsoft Google ka generally iit cgpa 7+ criteria rehta hai...But if bache jyada ho jaaye to class 10th 12th percentage kabhi kabhi rakh diya jaata hai.

  56. Sir earlier you said that only M.Tech CGPA matter but now you say those who have less than 70% they are not eligible for 40% companies sir please clear our confusion

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It totally depends on individual IIT and the companies. In IIT Delhi we don't usually set the 70% criteria but in other IITs it is often set. So to generalise things i am saying that you can expect 40% of companies to set the 70% criteria. But remember that even the same company has different criteria set at different IITs. Say for example in IITD there are far less students than IITM. So at IITD the selection criteria is usually more lenient compared to IITM.

      Delete
    2. Also keep a note that if your batch has a good hold in the placement cell then criteria can be lowered. Like criteria is lowered to even 6 cgpa sometimes saying the HR that we have rigorous curiculum and all. Good students want the criteria to be set higher so that they have less competition, like cgpa 9 and higher with 70% throughout. So placement all in all is a bit dirty politics at IIT's !!! You would see the criteria change very frequently. Lot of outside influence also is there. Booking 1st Slot related politics are also there. So don't worry about it too much now. You will learn about all these once you get into IIT's. But to be on the safe side, Mtech CGPA > 7.0 and 70% through is the best to have.

  57. Hi, your blog is very informative and helpful for aspirants. Keep up the good work.
I'm 2015 passout and working as a full stack developer in a small startup (5+ years of experience). Due to some personal financial problems, I dropped the idea of pursuing higher studies. But now the situation is better and I'm contemplating to go for M.E/M.Tech. Does it makes sense to go for Masters at this age and experience. My motive behind to pursue Masters:-
    1) IIT/IISc brand
    2) Placement opportunities (to be able to switch to a good product based company or statup)
    3) Interest in higher studies

I understand that there is no age criteria, but will I face any problem in campus recruitment? Did you encounter anyone having similar profile in IITD?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you join Mtech now then you have to look for offcampus opportunities else your experience won't be counted in oncampus placement and you have to again start your career from low level. You will get a lot of knowledge and also exposure for sure. No doubt seniors of IIT would be helping you out for offcampus placements. You have to decide on that.

      Delete
    2. ok thanx, but if I go for oncampus placements, will I face issue? Won't companies prefer young students? Have you seen any such case?

      Delete
    3. No instead they would prefer you. Because they are getting an experienced guy by giving low salary !!! So it's a win win for the companies. Loss for you. Yes many such cases happen every year in Mtech. It's common !!!

  58. Sir I already have a gap year after class 12th. I completed my Btech IT last year in 2021. I worked at a job in November 2021 but dropped out recently in February to focus solely on Gate 2023. Now if I prepare for Gate CSE 2023 at home without a job and get a good IIT next year then my gap would be counted as 2 years or 3 years. So in that case please tell me would it hamper my placement chances in any matter? Would I be allowed to sit for the placement companies or not?
