IIT Delhi MS Program

Here i would be briefing about the MS program and also side wise comparing it with M.Tech program. In the end it's the soul you who needs to choose based upon your choice and interests.

MS Program is considered one of the prestigious programs here at IIT Delhi. Now why it is considered as prestigious? The answer is simple, because professors like to work with MS people and do research with them.

In MS program you have to do total of 15 course credits and 31 project credits unlike M.tech program where we have to do 32 course credits and 24 project credits. So here is an advantage that you don't need to go through hectic course subjects and focus more on research aspect. There are also no compulsory subjects in IIT-D MS program, unlike M.tech program where we have to take 2 compulsory subject, i.e. Adv Data Structures and Introduction to logic and functional programming. You are free to take any subjects related to your choice and field on which you will be working on.

The M.tech program has a 2 years bound. But the MS program on the other hand generally varies from 2 - 3 years. There are hardly 10% of students who have finished their MS in 2 years. This is because of thesis work evaluation which takes a lot of time. Professors also expect a paper publication in the end of your MS program, i.e. your thesis work should be at least published in a renowned conference. Compared to M.tech program there are no such strict bounds of paper publication. M.tech project is there but doesn't mandate to publish a paper or work in strict research areas. If your CGPA is less than 6.5, you also get a chance in M.tech program to take course credits and not do M.tech project, actually you will be by default out of doing M.tech project. So in short if you are eager to go for research areas then MS is all what you need. You get 1st semester time to explore areas and select your guide in your research specific area.

Regarding Placements Now !!!... You can sit for IIT-D placements and around 70-80% of companies open up for MS programs. So you should not worry about placements. One more great news for MS people is that you don't need campus placements. You will be getting pre-placement offers from reputed companies in their research and development profile. This is so because of the referral of the professors and your research work. That's a perk of IIT-D MS program. In M.tech program as usual the placements are through campus only.

There is also flexibility here at IIT-D that you can convert your MS program to PHD program anytime if you feel like doing your research. You can also change from M.tech to MS or PHD. Again if you feel like PHD is not suitable for you, you can again switch back to your root program. Note:- MS to M.tech conversion is not possible !!!

In 2018 no one was selected for MS program at IIT-D, just because no one qualified for the same. It's not just the gate score, you have to clear the interview. You have to score 8/10 in interview else even if you are in to 100 you are rejected. Now interviews are totally luck. If a OS professor takes your interview he will ask OS questions, a DBMS prof will ask related to DBMS and so on... So you need to be thorough in all GATE subjects. Bit more in depth than gate. Probability and statistics are must. And recursions !!! You need to prove everything you say. So get ready with that. If you say lion is a bird then you have to prove it somehow !!!

The general cutoff for MS was 790 is 2018. It remains almost the same every year. There are total of 108 seats for MS program. Now you should think how selective IIT-D people are. Out of 108 seats 0 were selected in 2018. In M.tech also out of 80 seats they advertised only 40 seats and finally took only 26 candidates out of which 7 are sponsored candidates. So just 19 regular selections for M.tech program through Gate. So they don't care if seats are filled or not. If you deserve the seat, you will get it else not. Last time many people even complained of this thing to MHRD even, but the reply from IIT-D was straight "IIT's have the right to select or de-select based on interviews regardless of gate score". So don't think of even trying such things, it won't affect their decision. Better prepare hard for the interviews. If you wish to survive here, then you should be eligible, that's all they want.

That's all from my side. Now it's you who needs to choose based upon pros and cons and your area of interest. Good Luck !!! Go for it !!!

    1. Pretty much the same with similar course work and equal placement opportunities. It's a separate branch although, with no relation with computer science dept.
